Our vaka crews are travelling throughout Pacific Ocean. Seven vaka are sailing as one, channelling the wisdom of their ancestors and voyaging forward into the future, bringing together both ancient and modern wisdom to heal the injured Pacific Ocean. The vaka, the equipment and the training of the crew was funded by Okeanos – Foundation for the Sea.
In addition to obtaining ongoing funding to maintain our current Vaka Moana, Okeanos- Foundation of the Sea has initiated the "Vaka Motu" project, the vaka for the whole community. The vision is to connect all Pacific Islands in a sustainable, carbon-neutral fashion via Vaka Motu, thus gaining independence, better infrastructure, and more economic opportunities for remote island communities. We are developing a prototype vaka that can be assembled and maintained on remote islands and ultimately crewed by training locals. Everyone will be involved, men and women, young and old. Economic and educational opportunities will be created for remote island communities, promoting development and tourism in a sustainable, carbon-neutral manner. We will be able to build the vaka ourselves, creating jobs and economic independence. Most importantly, we will be able to afford to send our children who live on remote islands to school in a reliable, safe, and sustainable manner. This will also be an opportunity to have our future generations connect with their ancestors and maintain connections with their traditions which are rapidly being lost in our modernizing world.
We are currently working on paypal accounts for each the project, as well as individual vaka voyaging societies. In the meantime, please do send funds to Oceanic Nature Film Production, Ltd. who will transfer the funds directly to the specific project or society. Please make sure that the subject is distinct (i.e.: "For Pacific Voyagers“ or "For Vaka Motu“ or the name of the specific voyaging society the funds should go to).
