What does Uto Ni Yalo mean?
It literally translates as ’Heart of Spirit.’ Having said that, the Fijian language is replete with poetic expressions that sometimes contain complex or abstract ideas, which tend to lose some if not all of it’s intended meaning when translated/interpreted literally. Uto Ni Yalo can be best described as the spiritual state of original being.
What is Ocean Voyaging?
Put simply, it basically means going further out than your leisure boat ride. It also means inter-island or international travel. This does not mean that the canoe refrains from making short or very short excersions, sometimes just within the reef or just outside.
What does a typical sail involve?
The trip starts with a safety briefing, a group prayer before the sailing party heads out. Opportunities for training.
Is there any insurance coverage for crew and guests? There is some coverage.
Can I bring my laptop and camera?
Absolutely, however no liability is taken for any damage(s) or loss.
Is alcohol allowed on board?
Strictly no alcohol or smoking is permitted on board the Uto Ni Yalo. Kava however, is permissible.
What are the member benefits?
The opportunity to be participate in the Society’s activities, which at this stage is presently being developed. If anything, what this means is that you have immediate access to everything, which of course means you make yourself eligible to sail if there is opportunities to do so.
How is The Fiji Islands Voyaging Society funded? Since it’s recent inception, the the society members have had to raise funds for most of it’s activities. In addition, the Society seeks grants and donations that goes directly towards its operating costs. Is the Uto Ni Yalo ocean or seaworthy?
Absolutely! First of all, the Uto ni Yalo is skippered and crewed by qualified seamen. The vessel is registered in the Cook Islands and has all modern navigational and safety equipment such as GPS devices, satellite phones, campus, life-rafts, life-jackets, flares etc.
What can I learn by sailing on the Uto Ni Yalo?
Firstly there is the technical aspect of sailing and navigating a traditional canoe. Then there is an environmental advocacy/outreach/ambassadorship program. We also promote traditional arts and crafts such as chants, song, dance, weaving and carving, together with improving livelihoods in rural communities.
How can I become a member of The Fiji Islands Voyaging Society?
Absolutely! The Society levies a $30 annual membership fee for anyone wishing to be involved!
Where do you sleep?
The canoe have 8 individual bunks in each hull. These total of 16 below deck beds also have ample surrounding space to cater for personal belongings.
Is there a toilet on board?
Yes. But for that bit of luxury you will need to draw a bucket of sea water to flush the latrine.
Is there a shower on board?
No. On shorter trips one may take a few gallons of fresh water for a fresh water rinse. Sea water has always worked well for us.
